TOPOLINA® – pink groundcover rose – Kordes

A low, spreading rose with a bright yellow eye and dainty pink blooms, TOPOLINA® creates a soft, storybook carpet effect around paths, terraces and play areas while coping well with breezy, wetter weather and heavier soils often found in British family gardens. Its remontant flowering keeps borders lively from early summer into autumn, with clusters that refresh themselves thanks to good self-cleaning. Dense, glossy foliage and excellent disease resistance mean you spend more time enjoying and less time spraying or deadheading. As an own-root rose, it offers reassuring longevity, rebuilding from the base if stems are damaged and giving stable shape year after year. The compact, spreading groundcover habit works beautifully at the front of mixed cottage borders, along edges or tumbling over low walls, and also performs well in generous containers of at least 40–50 litres. Over time, this quietly reliable rose settles in, following the gentle rhythm of strong roots in the first year, fuller shoots in the second, and a truly charming display by the third, ideal for relaxed, romantic gardens.

Usage options

Target areaReasoning
Front-of-border cottage edging Its low, spreading habit naturally knits together the front of beds, softening paving and lawn edges with a romantic, storybook look. Continuous summer clusters of pink with a golden eye keep the border lively with very little effort – perfect for the time-pressed homeowner.
Groundcover for slopes and difficult corners The dense foliage and carpet-like spread help to cover bare soil, reducing weeding and visual gaps on banks or awkward spaces. Own-root strength and the ability to regenerate from the base make it a durable choice where access is tricky – ideal for practical-minded gardeners.
Low-maintenance family play areas Good disease resistance and self-cleaning flowers mean fewer spent blooms to tidy and less need for treatments near children’s play spaces. Its compact height keeps views open, framing lawns and sandpits with colour rather than tall, thorny barriers – well suited to busy families.
Large containers on patios and terraces TOPOLINA® adapts well to life in 40–50 litre tubs, where its spreading habit drapes attractively over the rim. With modest pruning needs and a naturally neat outline, it gives a long season of colour on patios or balconies without demanding complex care – attractive for space-conscious beginners.
Pollinator-friendly kitchen or cutting garden edge The single flowers with open, golden stamens are easy for bees to access, encouraging more pollinating insects around fruit trees and vegetables. Reliable repeat blooming keeps nectar on offer throughout the season, enhancing a productive plot – a thoughtful choice for wildlife-aware gardeners.
Informal hedging and path lining Planted at hedge spacing, its even spread and repeating flowers form a low, continuous ribbon of colour along walks and driveways. Simple annual pruning keeps it in shape, while own-root resilience ensures a long-lived line of plants developing from roots, then shoots, then full ornamental value – reassuring for planning-focused owners.
Coastal and exposed suburban gardens Robust foliage and strong health make it a good option where wind and rain quickly test weaker roses, helping beds stay tidy and colourful despite changeable conditions. Once rooted, it copes well provided watering is given in longer dry spells – especially suitable for weather-challenged gardeners.
Rock gardens and mixed shrub plantings Its compact size and bright, simple blooms nestle naturally among rocks, dwarf shrubs and perennials, providing a soft pink counterpoint to silver foliage and grasses. Long service life and minimal maintenance needs suit schemes designed to mature gracefully – appealing to design-conscious enthusiasts.

Styling ideas

  • Cottage-Edge Ribbon – Plant in a meandering strip along paths with lavender and catmint to frame a lawn in pink and blue softness – ideal for lovers of relaxed cottage borders.
  • Patio-Curtain Pot – Use a single plant in a 50 litre terracotta tub, letting stems spill over the rim beside a bench for afternoon tea charm – suited to balcony and terrace gardeners.
  • Kitchen-Garden Halo – Line vegetable beds with TOPOLINA® to attract pollinators and create a pretty pink border around herbs and salad rows – perfect for home-growers who value both beauty and yield.
  • Storybook-Slope Carpet – Mass plant on a gentle bank with spring bulbs and low grasses, creating a pink-and-gold tapestry through summer – a good solution for owners taming uneven ground.
  • Rockery-Accent Drift – Tuck small groups among boulders and compact shrubs so flowers peek between stones, softening hard landscaping – appealing to gardeners refining established rock gardens.

Technical cultivar profile
ParameterData
Name and registration Groundcover shrub rose, registered as KORpifleu, marketed as Topolina® NektarGarten®, with the ADR-tested garden form sold here as a consumer own-root, container-grown plant.
Origin and breeding Bred by Tim-Hermann Kordes (Germany) from unnamed seedlings in 1998, registered in 2014 and introduced after 2014 by W. Kordes’ Söhne as a modern groundcover selection.
Awards and recognition Holds the ADR award (2010), indicating independently tested garden performance, including strong disease resistance, good ornamental value and reliable behaviour under varied conditions.
Growth and structural characteristics Low, spreading habit 30–55 cm high and 40–70 cm wide, with dense, dark green glossy foliage and moderate prickles; naturally forms a compact, ground-hugging carpet with minimal shaping.
Flower morphology Single, flat blooms 0.5–1.5 inches wide, carried in clusters, with 5–12 petals; consistently repeat-flowering throughout the season, with a notably abundant second flush after the first peak.
Colour data and phenology Mid pink outer petals and pastel inner tones with a pale yellow petal base and vivid golden eye; buds deep pink, colour lightens gently in strong sun yet generally holds a cheerful, bright effect.
Fragrance and aroma Classed as a scentless rose with no noticeable fragrance, but highly attractive to pollinating insects due to the open, single flower form and prominent stamens offering accessible pollen.
Hip characteristics Only occasional small, spherical red hips 6–10 mm are expected; overall hip set is light, so the plant concentrates energy on repeat flowering rather than abundant fruiting.
Resistance and winter hardiness Rated H7 and hardy to approximately −26 to −23 °C, with proven resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust; tolerates heat well, needing extra water only during extended droughts.
Horticultural recommendations Suited to groundcover, borders, slopes, rock gardens and large containers; plant 30–55 cm apart, water to establish, then prune lightly and enjoy its low-maintenance, long-lived own-root character.

TOPOLINA® offers long-lasting, low, spreading colour with strong disease resistance and pollinator-friendly single blooms, and as an own-root rose it builds a stable, enduring presence in your garden, making it a thoughtful choice to plant this season.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
