ONDELLA™ – orange-red hybrid tea rose - Meilland

This classic hybrid tea is designed for understated garden elegance, offering bright orange-red, high-centred blooms on an upright, compact plant that fits effortlessly into small and medium family gardens. ONDELLA™ flowers generously in flushes from early summer, with a particularly strong second wave for long-season colour, and its good self-cleaning habit means most spent blooms drop away on their own, reducing deadheading. On its own roots it settles in steadily, building a durable framework and dependable performance over time, well suited to gardens where occasional strong winds and driving rain are part of everyday weather. Moderately dense, dark green foliage gives a neat, structural outline in borders, while the rose’s good heat and moderate drought tolerance support easier care through warmer spells. In a 40–50 litre or larger container it can be kept near a sunny seating area for cut stems and close-up enjoyment, developing from early establishment to a full garden presence over its first three growing seasons, and its own-root resilience supports a naturally long-lived plant in a family setting.

Usage options

Target areaReasoning
Sunny focal point in a small family garden The compact, upright habit and moderate height make ONDELLA™ ideal as a single specimen near a patio, front door or garden bench, giving structured form without overwhelming limited space; suits the needs of a busy homeowner.
Romantic cottage-style border with repeat colour Abundant, well-timed repeat flowering with a strong second flush keeps borders lively through summer, helping create that storybook cottage look with reliable waves of orange-red blooms; reassuring for the beginner gardener.
Low-maintenance rose bed in a family setting Good self-cleaning means many spent flowers fall away on their own, keeping plants tidy with less deadheading and freeing up time for other garden tasks, which particularly benefits the time-pressed family.
Heat-exposed front garden or paved area Good heat tolerance and coping with moderate drought make this rose well suited to warmer, more reflective sites, provided occasional watering is available during long dry spells, easing worries for the urban gardener.
Traditional cutting corner by the kitchen garden High-centred hybrid tea blooms on straight stems provide classic cut flowers for informal vases at home, bringing a gentle rose character indoors from a small, manageable planting; perfect for the cottage-style enthusiast.
Raised beds and heavy clay areas The own-root form settles reliably in improved soil with decent drainage, making it easier to manage beds over heavier clay subsoils while giving a stable, long-term framework for the planting; well suited to the practical homeowner.
Large containers on terraces and balconies In 40–50 litre or larger pots, the upright, moderately dense shrub provides vertical interest and colour where ground space is limited, while own-root resilience helps long-term performance in container culture; ideal for the balcony gardener.
Wind-affected but sheltered family plots A neat, moderately thorny framework and firm flower stems cope well in average garden breezes and showers, helping maintain a composed appearance even when changeable weather passes through; reassuring for the coastal resident.

Styling ideas

  • Kitchen-table posies – Plant ONDELLA™ near a back door with herbs and soft perennials for quick cutting, creating informal jugs of orange-red blooms and foliage – ideal for cottage-style cooks who love home-grown flowers.
  • Sunset border – Combine its vermilion-orange flowers with dusky purples and bronzed grasses to echo evening light – suited to gardeners wanting a warm, romantic focus without complex maintenance.
  • Patio statement – Grow in a 50 litre terracotta pot flanked by lavender and thyme to frame a seating area in a small garden – for those seeking strong colour and structure from just a few easy plants.
  • Gentle structure – Use as repeating vertical accents along a path, backed by low hedging or evergreen Euonymus, to give rhythm and tidy outlines – perfect for families wanting order without formal fuss.
  • Relaxed slope planting – Dot groups on a sunny bank among airy Knautia and Verbena for a soft, meadow-like feel anchored by upright roses – for romantic gardeners aiming at a loose, countryside impression.

Technical cultivar profile
ParameterData
Name and registration Hybrid tea rose, registered as MEIvanama, traded as ONDELLA™. American Rose Society exhibition name Ondella. Belongs to the Hybrid Tea commercial and exhibition group.
Origin and breeding Bred by Marie-Louise Meilland, Meilland International, France. Parentage: (‘Elegy’ × ‘Arturo Toscanini’) × (‘Peace’ × ‘Demain’). Introduced and registered in 1979 as a premium garden and cutting rose.
Growth and structural characteristics Upright shrub 80–110 cm tall, spread 50–70 cm, moderately dense dark green matte foliage, moderately thorny stems, forming a tidy, vertical accent suitable for beds, borders and larger containers.
Flower morphology Large, double, high-centred blooms, 26–39 petals, usually borne singly per stem. Strong repeat flowering with a notable second flush, providing classic hybrid tea form for garden and cutting use.
Colour data and phenology Bright, saturated orange-red overall (RHS 34A–34B), with fiery tones in buds and inner petals. Colour holds well in sun, fading only slightly to salmon-orange, and blooms maintain an attractive appearance.
Fragrance and aroma Very weak fragrance, only a light classic rose note close-up. Best chosen where colour, form and garden performance are more important than strong scent, such as busy family or front gardens.
Hip characteristics Hip set is generally limited due to double flowers; occasional small, spherical hips 8–12 mm may form, in bright red (RHS 43A), adding a discreet seasonal interest without dominating the plant.
Resistance and winter hardiness Hardy to about –15 to –12 °C (RHS H6, Swedish Zone 2, USDA 7b). Good resistance to powdery mildew and black spot, medium susceptibility to rust; tolerates heat and moderate drought with sensible watering.
Horticultural recommendations Best in full sun and well-drained soil. Space 40–90 cm depending on use, 4–4.6 plants/m² for massing. Medium maintenance, with occasional pest and disease checks and light seasonal pruning for shape.

ONDELLA™ Hybrid tea rose MEIvanama brings upright structure, generous repeat flowering and naturally long own-root resilience to everyday gardens; consider it if you want enduring colour with straightforward care.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
