MANDARIN® – yellow dwarf-mini rose - Kordes

With its compact, bushy habit and clusters of glowing mandarin-yellow blooms, MANDARIN® creates an immediate sense of cosiness in smaller family gardens and on patios. This dwarf miniature rose was bred by Kordes to be reliably floriferous, giving you repeat waves of colour from early summer well into autumn, even in gardens where breezy, unsettled weather and frequent rain with strong winds near the coast would spoil more delicate varieties. Its neat size makes it ideal for edging paths, filling low cottage-style borders or starring in a large pot by the back door, where you can enjoy its delicately sweet fragrance at close quarters. As an own-root plant, it settles steadily and is naturally regenerative, building a long-lived framework that tolerates flexible pruning and copes well with normal family life. Over time you will see a clear progression – strong roots in the first year, fuller shoots in the second, and by the third year a rounded, storybook presence at full ornamental value. Medium maintenance – mainly simple deadheading and the odd tidy – suits busy gardeners who still want traditional romance and softly glowing colour among herbs, vegetables and old-fashioned perennials.

Usage options

Target areaReasoning
Low cottage-style border in a small family garden The compact, bushy habit and 45–55 cm height give a softly rounded edge to beds without overwhelming nearby perennials or vegetables, providing reliable repeat flowering for a romantic cottage look over many years, perfect for beginners.
Path edging and front-of-border ribbons Short internodes and dense foliage allow you to plant at 25–30 cm spacings, creating a tidy, low hedge that is easy to maintain with light annual trimming and occasional disease checks, ideal for a neat yet informal frame for busy-owners.
Large patio containers and roof terraces The naturally dwarf size and upright, bushy structure suit long-term culture in a 40–50 litre pot, where own-root growth gives good anchoring and recovery from any winter damage, especially attractive for space-conscious urbanites.
Mini standard (lollipop) feature by a seating area When budded or trained as a mini standard, the small but plentiful blooms form a rounded crown that flowers in repeated flushes, adding height and charm beside a bench or bistro set, particularly appealing to cottage-garden enthusiasts.
Mixed planting with herbs and kitchen-garden edges The warm yellow to cream blooms harmonise with greens and silvers, pairing well with catmint and bellflowers, while the bushy structure marks boundaries between beds and paths without casting heavy shade, suiting practical-minded homeowners.
Weather-exposed family gardens, including coastal locations The sturdy, low framework and glossy foliage cope better with blustery, rainy conditions than taller, fragile roses, and own-root resilience helps the plant recover if wind snaps any shoots, reassuring for storm-prone gardeners.
Easy-care rose display for hobby gardeners Medium maintenance means mainly deadheading clusters and a simple winter prune, while remontant flowering and moderate disease resistance ensure dependable summer colour without complex spraying routines, a good fit for time-pressed hobbyists.
Long-term planting in small beds and family front gardens Own-root growth gives a durable base that does not rely on a graft, so the plant can regenerate from the crown after hard winters and maintain its ornamental value steadily, making it a wise choice for long-view planners.

Styling ideas

  • Tea-path – line a narrow gravel path to your seating area with MANDARIN® and interplant with low catmint for a soft yellow-and-lilac edging – for lovers of informal cottage charm.
  • Kitchen-nook – position a pair of large pots (40–50 litres) with MANDARIN® by the back door, underplanted with trailing thyme for scent and structure – for busy cooks who want effortless colour.
  • Storybook-border – weave small groups among foxgloves, bellflowers and old varieties of chives for a layered, romantic border that stays low at the front – for families who enjoy traditional planting.
  • Front-garden-frame – use as a low hedge along a short front wall or drive, repeating at regular intervals to give instant structure and long-term coherence – for homeowners seeking tidy but welcoming kerb appeal.
  • Mini-standard-focus – train as a mini standard in a half-barrel planter and circle the base with violas and dwarf pinks to create a cheerful focal point – for collectors and enthusiasts of miniature roses.

Technical cultivar profile
ParameterData
Name and registration MANDARIN® – yellow dwarf-mini rose, miniature (Polyantha) group; registered as KORcelin, ARS exhibition name Mandarin; part of the Mini – dwarf rose collection for garden and show use.
Origin and breeding Bred by W. Kordes & Sons in Sparrieshoop, Germany; breeding completed 1979, introduced and registered in 1987; parentage officially recorded as unknown; distributed initially by W. Kordes’ Söhne.
Awards and recognition Recipient of the Golden Prize of the City of Glasgow at the Glasgow International Rose Trials in 1994, highlighting its ornamental value and performance under independent trial conditions in a cool, damp climate.
Growth and structural characteristics Dwarf, bushy, upright shrub reaching around 45–55 cm in height and 35–45 cm spread; dense, glossy dark green foliage; moderately thorny stems; forms a compact, well-branched framework suitable for edging and containers.
Flower morphology Miniature, cluster-flowered blooms, typically 0.5–1.5 inches in diameter; double flowers with 26–39 petals, cupped in form; remontant, with abundant second and further flushes under normal garden care through the season.
Colour data and phenology Vivid yellow flowers with occasional faint pink edging; buds bright lemon–butter yellow; blooms fade through golden and straw yellow to cream and ivory; moderate colour retention, with overall effect remaining warm and cheerful.
Fragrance and aroma Fragrance is very weak and barely noticeable, with only a delicately sweet character detectable at close range, making the variety primarily a visual feature rather than a scent rose for strongly perfumed plantings.
Hip characteristics Hip set is generally poor due to the double flower form; where formed, hips are small, spherical, and orange-red, about 5–7 mm in diameter, adding only modest late-season interest and limited wildlife feeding value.
Resistance and winter hardiness Rated to approximately –21 to –18 °C (RHS H7, Swedish Zone 3, USDA 6b); resistant to powdery mildew, with moderate susceptibility to black spot and rust, usually manageable with good hygiene and occasional treatments.
Horticultural recommendations Best in a sunny position with well-drained soil; spacing 25–45 cm depending on use; 13–15 plants/m² for mass planting; suitable for containers, mini standards, small beds and edging; medium maintenance with periodic pest management.

MANDARIN® offers compact, repeat flowering, romantic yellow clusters in small spaces, combines dependable long-term performance with resilient own-root growth, and is an excellent choice if you prefer enduring charm with straightforward care.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
